Alternative Funding: When Conventional Borrowing Does Not Fit

Three situations sit outside standard business lending — a company with no operating history, an owner whose credit file is impaired, and an offer priced by factor rate rather than interest. Each has its own page because the comparison works differently in each.

“Alternative” describes where a product sits relative to conventional lending. It does not mean easier, faster or more expensive as a rule. It means the questions you need to ask change.

Educational comparison only. No page here indicates approval odds. Independent providers set their own criteria and terms.

In this group

  • Platform disclosure. ShopRates is an independent informational and referral platform. It does not lend, broker, originate, underwrite, service or make credit decisions. Providers decide whether financing is available, on what terms and after what verification.

What these three have in common

In each case something a conventional lender relies on is missing or impaired — trading history, credit record, or the fixed repayment schedule itself. That absence is what shapes the offer, and it is where cost and risk concentrate.

It is also where the most aggressive marketing operates. Guaranteed approval claims, advance fees and “no credit check” promises cluster around exactly these searches, because the people making them are under pressure and have fewer options to compare against.

None of that makes these routes wrong. A pre-revenue company genuinely cannot show revenue, and a real product exists for that. The point is that the comparison needs more care here, not less.

Which situation describes you

Compare the full obligation — cash delivered, total repaid, collateral, guaranty and what a missed payment triggers — before letting timing decide.

Compare the routes in detail

Startup Business Funding

For a business with no operating history. Starts with a complete opening budget, the owner contribution and cash runway rather than an assumption that products accept pre-revenue applicants. Covers SBA microloan and 7(a) context, equity, crowdfunding and the realities of grants.

Bad Credit Business Funding

Separates a credit-file problem from a cash-flow problem, because the fix differs. Covers what providers examine besides score, how collateral changes the picture, and the affordability test to run before accepting any offer.

Merchant Cash Advances

A purchase of future receipts, not a loan. Explains factor rate against interest rate, the gap between purchased amount and net cash, how daily or weekly debits affect cash flow, and which alternatives are worth comparing first.

Warning signs that apply across all three

These appear more often around alternative funding than anywhere else on this site. Any one of them is reason to stop and verify.

  • Guaranteed approval offered before anything has been verified.
  • An advance fee requested through an unverified channel to release funds.
  • A factor rate described as an interest rate or an APR.
  • Fees, broker charges or an old balance payoff left out of the net-funding conversation.
  • One advance needed to pay another advance.
  • Pressure to share a bank password or sign an incomplete contract.
  • A provider that cannot explain its liens, guaranty scope or payoff calculation.

No page on this site can tell you whether you will be approved. Anyone who can, before reviewing your documents, is not describing a real underwriting process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is alternative funding more expensive than a conventional loan?

Often, but not always, and the comparison depends on the specific offers rather than the category. Compare net cash delivered and total scheduled repayment across real written offers rather than assuming a category is cheaper or dearer.

Does “alternative” mean the provider is less regulated?

Not necessarily, and it varies by product and state. What does change is the contract structure — a merchant cash advance is a purchase of receipts rather than a loan, which affects the legal treatment. Read the actual agreement rather than relying on the label.

Can I get funding with no revenue and poor credit together?

Those are two separate constraints and they compound. Read both Startup Business Funding and Bad Credit Business Funding, and test affordability under a downside case before pursuing either.

Is a merchant cash advance a loan?

Typically it is structured as a purchase of future receipts rather than a loan, which is why it is priced by factor rate instead of interest. That distinction affects the contract, the collection mechanics and the legal treatment. See Merchant Cash Advances.

Should I fix my credit before applying?

Correcting factual errors and reviewing delinquent balances first usually helps when timing allows. No particular score increase or approval can be promised, and waiting is not always possible — but it is worth pricing the delay against the cost of borrowing now.

What if I only need funding because of an existing advance?

That is the clearest signal to stop. Using new financing to service old financing raises the combined burden while shrinking operating cash. Get written balances and payoff figures for everything outstanding before considering anything new.

Does ShopRates decide whether I qualify?

No. ShopRates provides information and may connect you with independent providers. Each provider makes its own eligibility and pricing decisions.
